Key capabilities

Apply persistent information-centric security

With LiveCycle Rights Management ES, you can encrypt files and apply persistent and dynamic enforcement on sensitive information that helps maintain confidentiality regardless of where the data resides in the information lifecycle. Rather than protecting a piece of the infrastructure and locking users out, information-centric security with LiveCycle Rights Management ES maintains effective protection while promoting virtually seamless collaboration inside and outside the firewall.

Dynamically manage information policies

LiveCycle Rights Management ES makes it easy for you to dynamically manage access and usage rights to protect files based on policies that map business objectives to security requirements. Security policies are maintained at the server and don't travel with the document, so you can revise and revoke access and usage rights at any time without having to reissue a file after it is distributed. When you revise a usage policy — for example, assign an offline lease to an executive who needs access to a particular document during a flight or add an expiration date to a monthly price list after which the document can no longer be accessed — the new policy controls are enforced the next time access to the document is requested. As the sensitivity level of a document changes over time (such as prereleased financial statements that eventually become public), dynamic policy can help ensure the appropriate protection at the appropriate time.

Enhance the value of existing IT infrastructure

Built on a J2EE server, LiveCycle Rights Management ES easily integrates with existing enterprise infrastructures via web services, authentication systems, and enterprise content management (ECM) systems for cost-effective, centralized document protection, control, and administration. Accordingly, LiveCycle Rights Management ES leverages existing Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and Microsoft Active Directory implementations to authenticate recipients' credentials and provide protection based on existing identity and group structures. Using LiveCycle Content Services ES and LiveCycle ES Connectors for ECM software, you can then extend document manageability, including version control and expiration dates, to help ensure that the most up-to-date version of a document is in use, even after the document has been extracted from storage and distributed.

Protect PDF documents in workflows, both online and offline

Authoring and viewing rights-protected documents is easy and convenient, because LiveCycle Rights Management ES integrates tightly with Adobe Acrobat®, Reader®, and LiveCycle PDF Generator ES software. Working within Acrobat, authors can apply security policies to PDF files created from popular desktop applications and application suites, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and CAD files. Or, if high volumes of documents are being processed, automated processes can be created that generate PDF files and then apply security policies based on predefined rules. Recipients can also view and work with rights-protected documents both online and offline. For offline use, recipients are assigned an offline lease that entitles them to access and view protected information for a prescribed period before the document becomes inaccessible and their access rights have to be renewed. Rights-protected PDF files offer the additional benefits of ubiquitous, cross-platform, free Adobe Reader, thus eliminating the need for learning a new tool or installing additional software when viewing protected information.

Protect the most widely used document formats in the enterprise

LiveCycle Rights Management ES integrates just as easily with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as with CAD applications such as PTC Pro/ENGINEER and CATIA (PDF, 452k). Authors can create documents and apply policies from within the user interface of any of these applications. Recipients can view and work with these rights-protected documents — like their PDF counterparts — both online and offline.
