You can easily learn how to redact in Adobe, as Acrobat allows you to permanently remove text and graphics from your PDF document. First, make a copy of your PDF so you don’t accidentally lose something you want to keep. Then, go into Edit Mode and follow these steps to select text or images and redact them.

1. Select Tools › Redact.

Pick outline and fill colors for the redacted area, or click Use Overlay Text. Add custom text in the field, choose from US Privacy Act and FOIA codes, or import new codes. Click OK when you have your selections.

4. Click Apply. A pop-up will appear warning you that once you click OK, the redacted information will be permanently deleted and you won’t be able to retrieve it.

Some situations require more than just knowing how to redact a PDF.

For example, US courts require that mentions of Social Security numbers, names of minor children, dates of birth, and financial account numbers be redacted in legal filings. You can make quick work of these redactions with the Find Text tool in PDFs that contain searchable text.

  • Single word or phrase: Just type the word or phrase in the text field.

How to redact hidden content in a PDF.

When you learn how to redact in Adobe Acrobat, you can use the Remove Hidden Information feature to find and remove content such as hidden text, metadata, comments, and attachments. When you remove these items, additional ones are automatically removed from the document, such as digital signatures, document information added by third-party plug-ins and applications, and special features that enable users to review, fill and sign PDF documents.

The removed information might include metadata, embedded content, attached files, scripts, hidden layers, embedded search indexes, stored form data, comments and annotations, hidden data from previous document saves, obscured text and images, unreferenced data, links, actions, JavaScript, and overlapping objects.

  1. Open the PDF in Acrobat, and from the global bar, choose All tools > Redact a PDF.
  2. Select Sanitize document. In the Sanitize Document dialog, to remove hidden information, click on Selectively remove.
  3. Select Remove to delete selected items from the file, and click OK.
  4. Choose Save As… and save the file with a different name to avoid overwriting the original.

  • Redact at the document-planning stage whenever possible. Decide which sections, pages, or data fields need removal before you begin editing. Planning ahead reduces the risk of overlooking sensitive information and prevents multiple review cycles.
  • Use page-level redaction for non-essential sections. If an entire page is off-limits, such as appendices with personal data or outdated cost sheets — apply a blanket redaction instead of masking individual items. It’s faster, and it guarantees nothing slips through.
  • Run language-aware searches. You can search using Unicode or specific language options. When dealing with multilingual documents, set the search to “All Languages” or specify each language so accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and right-to-left text are also flagged for redaction.
  • Standardize the appearance of redaction marks. Customize the fill color, overlay text (e.g., “REDACTED” or “CONFIDENTIAL”), and opacity so every redacted area looks consistent across the file.
  • Add context-saving labels sparingly. If removing entire paragraphs could confuse the reader, consider inserting brief replacement text (“Section removed for privacy”) in the redaction box. This maintains readability without revealing protected content.
  • Lock down metadata and hidden layers. After visual redaction, always run your editor’s metadata removal or “sanitize document” feature. Comments, hidden layers, and revision history can leak information even when on-page content is blacked out.
  • Create a secure, final copy. Once redaction is complete, save the file as a flattened or rasterized PDF (or export to a secure archive format). Flattening merges marks into the page, making it impossible to reveal the original text with basic editing tools.
  • Maintain an unredacted master under strict access controls. Keep the original version in a protected repository, labeled clearly and shielded by permissions to ensure you can revisit original data if the need arises.
