How to extract text from images with Adobe Scan
Looking to scan text from an image? No need to dust off your old scanner. Instead, you can use Adobe Scan to quickly and effectively extract text from images. Here’s how:
- Download and open the app. Head to the App Store on your smartphone or tablet and download the Adobe Scan app. Open the app and select the “Document” mode.
- Use your device camera. Point your device’s camera at the document you want to scan, ensuring you’ve captured all the text you want to scan.
- Start scanning. Scanning will begin automatically. If not, click the shutter icon to capture the image.
- Edit your scan. Click ‘Continue’ so you can crop the image and make further edits. If you’ve missed parts of the text and need to retake the image, hit ‘Scan again’. Likewise, if you need to scan more pages of the same document, you can take more scans now.
- Confirm your scan. As soon as you’ve scanned everything you need, click on the symbol on the bottom right which displays the number of pages you’ve scanned.
- Save your scan. Give your scan a recognisable name and click on “Save PDF” at the top right.
- Share scans. You can now share your finished scan as a PDF by clicking ‘Share’. Whether it’s an attachment in an email or Messenger, share it as many times as you require.

Scan handwriting in an image and extract to text.
By scanning documents with printed text and saving them as a PDF, you can easily extract text sections from them. This isn’t as easy with handwritten notes as the text won’t be automatically recognised. So, how do you copy text from an image, document or form that’s been handwritten?
This is where OCR (Optical Character Recognition) can help. Using tools with OCR allows both handwritten and typed texts to be converted into a searchable format so you don’t have to tirelessly retype everything again.
You can use Adobe Acrobat Pro to get started with OCR.
