[Glyn Dewis]: Now the subject loves this portrait, the light, the pose, and the mood, but what she doesn't love is the background.
But with Edit in Firefly, we can swap it for something better, directly from within Lightroom.
And the result?
Completely realistic.
Hi, I'm Glyn Dewis, and in the next couple of minutes, I'm going to show you how to send a photo from Lightroom to Adobe Firefly and completely replace its background with a simple text prompt.
Prepare the photo in Lightroom
So here's the image with those dark roof supports behind our subject and one of them growing right out of her head which we definitely don't want.
Of course you could do this in Photoshop but perhaps you don't know Photoshop very well and are unsure of the best way to go about it.
That's where the Edit in Firefly option comes in real handy.
I've already made a few minor adjustments here to the image.
Send the photo from Lightroom to Firefly
You can see before and after as I press the backslash key on my keyboard.
Now I'll go to the Photo menu and choose Generate in Firefly.
Then Edit photo.
This opens a web browser, taking us to the Firefly website with our photo loaded.
Select an AI model and output resolution
From the model picker, I'll choose Gemini 3.1, known as Nano Banana 2, which does a great job of preserving the original subject.
Aspect ratio set to Auto and for the best quality I'm using 4K.
And you can see how many Generative Credits this feature uses right here.
That number will vary depending on which AI model you choose and on the resolution you're generating at.
Generative Credits are included in your plan and to see how many you have and when they reset click your Adobe ID icon in the upper right.
Write a prompt to describe the new background
But now for the prompt which is on screen in full, so do pause and read it.
Notice the lighting terms.
She's lit with warm low sun so it asks for golden hour light streaming into the scene, matching the light already on her.
It asks for the background to be out of focus and it spells out what must not change, the woman herself.
Generate and download the final image
So I'll click Generate and Firefly creates a single new image and look, a brand new autumn backdrop.
The roof supports gone, the golden light matching perfectly, and the subject hasn't changed one bit.
Now, one thing to clarify is that you don't have to give the AI direction about lighting.
Some models, Gemini included, are really good without it.
Here are two generations made with no mention of the lighting at all.
You can simply click Generate again and Firefly creates another version based on your most recent one.
And when you're happy, you can download the final image from right here.
So that's how to replace a background with Edit in Firefly from Lightroom.
One photo, one well-written prompt and a completely new setting.
Now it's your turn though.
Give it a try on one of your own photos and see what it can do.
Enjoy.
