Make YouTube thumbnails faster with a Photoshop template

Learn what makes a strong thumbnail; then build a reusable template to create and test new variations.

Introduction

[Kaleb Gonyea]: You can spend hours coming up with ideas, filming, editing your YouTube video only to upload it and receive barely any views.

Sometimes the problem's not the video, it's the thumbnail.

So today, I'm going to show you how to take a boring thumbnail like this and make it more clickable using Adobe Photoshop.

For me, a good thumbnail actually starts with the idea,

Plan your title and thumbnail before you shoot

even before I start filming.

I like to think of the title and the thumbnail as a pair.

Together, they're the package that gets someone interested enough to click.

The title can give context or tease what the video is about, while the thumbnail creates the visual hook, curiosity, or emotion.

I'll explore a few ideas for both, making sure that they work together without saying the exact same thing.

For the thumbnail itself, I try to communicate one idea as quickly as possible with a strong image, expression, or an obvious focal point.

I'm always thinking about how it's going to look really small in the YouTube feed and not how it looks full size in Photoshop.

Shoot once, reuse often

Next, I'll take a bunch of photos of myself, so I have plenty of options to work with.

I also keep a bank of photos from previous shoots that I can reuse.

I've found that sometimes making a serious or even slightly ridiculous face can help with engagement.

It might feel silly taking the photo, but that extra expression can really help when the thumbnail is tiny on someone's screen.

Once I find a photo I like, I'll bring it into Photoshop and start making some adjustments.

One tool that I like using is Neural Filters, which you can find by going to Filter > Neural Filters.

Cleaning up the photo is important because these small adjustments help the subject pop, create more separation from the background, and improve contrast.

Since thumbnails are usually viewed really small, I want to make sure that there is a clear focal point that is easy to recognize right away.

When I first started making thumbnails, I would manually cut myself out using the pen tool, but now I can just use the Remove Background button.

Photoshop automatically creates a layer mask, which means I can always go back and refine the selection if I need to.

Nothing is permanent, which makes it really easy to keep adjusting things as I go.

Next, I'll add a Curves adjustment layer to give the photo a little more contrast and help it pop.

I like doing this with an adjustment layer because it's not changing the original photo.

If I decide later that I pushed things too far, I can always come back and adjust it.

Give your subject some context

Now that my photo is looking good, I need a background.

Sometimes I'll keep it really simple and use a solid color that creates separation between me and the background, helping the subject stand out with the colors competing with each other.

Other times, I'll use the photo or generate an image that fits the video.

If the background is too distracting, I'll usually add a Gaussian Blur by going to effects in the applications menu, then Blur and choosing Gaussian Blur.

It's also important to keep these elements on a separate layer so I can adjust, move or edit each one individually without affecting the rest of the thumbnail.

You can create a new layer using the + button at the bottom of the Layers panel or by hitting CMD Shift N on Mac or CTRL Shift N on PC.

Use short text to say what the image does not

so now I want to add some text.

I keep thumbnail text short and use it to add to the idea rather than repeat the title.

Over time, I've built a visual brand for my channel, so I try to stay consistent with the fonts I use.

I like to pick something fun and bold that fits my style, while still being legible at any size.

That consistency also helps subscribers recognize my content in their feed and builds brand equity over time.

I can grab the Type tool and start adding whatever I want the thumbnail to say.

"Would you click?"

One feature I really like is Dynamic Text, which you can find in the Contextual Task Bar.

I used to spend a ton of time adjusting the size and spacing to get text to fit perfectly in an area, but now I can use Dynamic Text and Photoshop automatically fits it into a space for me.

That's super convenient.

At this point we technically have a thumbnail, but I like to add a few details to take it to the next level.

These supporting elements can give viewers more context at a glance and help them recognize what the video is about before they even read anything.

Since I make a lot of content around design, I'll often use things like 3D app icons and place them throughout the composition.

I can add a blur to some of the foreground elements to create more depth and add highlights and shadows to help everything feel like it belongs in the same scene.

For example, I can create a clipping mask and paint a subtle shadow to make an icon look like it's actually casting a shadow onto me.

These are small details, but together they support the hook, add context, and make the thumbnail feel so much more dimensional.

Okay, now we have a thumbnail we're happy with, so you might think we're done.

But there's one more step.

Make thumbnail variations and test on YouTube

YouTube lets you test multiple thumbnails to see which version performs best, so I always like to take advantage of that.

In Photoshop, I'll create two more Artboards and make two new variations.

Artboards makes it easy to explore a few ideas side by side without rebuilding everything from scratch.

I want each variation to test a different way of selling the same video, like changing the emotion, visual payoff, or composition.

I like to keep the core ideas similar while making each one different enough that I can actually learn something from the test.

And just like that we have 3 different YouTube thumbnails made entirely in Adobe Photoshop.

Now I can upload all 3, run a thumbnail test, and let the results tell me which one works the best.

The biggest thing to remember is to keep your thumbnail clear, make it stand out, and don't be afraid to test different ideas.

Sometimes the smallest change can make a huge difference on how many people click.

Use Dynamic Text to quickly create visually engaging typography that fits your layout. Together, your thumbnail and title should give viewers a reason to click.

Make thumbnail variations using artboards to test on YouTube

YouTube lets you A/B test up to three thumbnails to see which performs best. Use artboards to quickly create meaningful variations with different expressions, compositions, or visual payoffs. Run a thumbnail test, then apply what you learn to future thumbnails.

Tip: Before you post, squint-test your thumbnail at a small size. Does the main idea still come across? Then, place it in a screenshot of the YouTube Home feed. Does it still stand out?

YouTube thumbnail specifications (2026): 3840 × 2160 px; 16:9; JPG or PNG; max 50 MB (desktop) or 2 MB (mobile); minimum width 640 px.

This tutorial uses 1920 × 1080 px, a common 16:9 Full HD size that meets YouTube's thumbnail requirements.
