Welcome to Adobe Illustrator.
Illustrator is the industry standard vector graphic design app for creating logos, icons, illustrations and more.
Now reimagined for iPad.
Let's cover some of the basics to get you started.
In Illustrator, you can create documents to suit your needs maybe to create a logo, and set options like the number of Artboards, which are like pages in Adobe InDesign or a Word processing app.
I'll open a document I've been working on.
Documents you create are auto saved to Adobe's Cloud while you work so you can access them anywhere.
With the file open, on the left is the Toolbar with a variety of tools for creating, selecting and editing.
You can either long press or double tap to see any nested tools with artwork selected using the Selection Tool here.
In the Properties panel on the right, you can access Settings and Properties for objects and type like Size, Appearance and Font.
Tapping to open the Layers panel, this is where you can organize and arrange your artwork.
Right here you see the Taskbar.
With content selected you can view more actions like aligning artwork, flipping it, combining artwork, editing paths you create and more.
Now in Illustrator artwork lives on artboards.
This project has 4 artboards for different artwork.
With the Artboard Tool in the Toolbar, you can easily create artboards of specific sizes, you can draw custom artboards, you can edit and delete artboards as well.
The Selection and Direct Selection Tools you see here lets you move and manipulate artwork.
You'll be using these a lot.
With the Selection Tool selected, you can drag across multiple objects to select them all at once or you can tap to select a single object.
If you double tap an object like a shape, the Direct Selection Tool is now selected, and you enter in Isolation mode.
With the Direct Selection Tool, you can then drag across or tap to select the anchor points that make up the shape and you can transform it.
To exit tap Done.
To move around in your document, you can use two fingers to pinch zoom in, or zoom out, or use two fingers to pan around.
Let's explore some of the ways to create content.
In the Toolbar on the left you'll see a series of Shape Tools.
If you double tap or long press the Shape Tool, you can view them all.
Selecting a Shape Tool, you can create a geometric shape.
As you create shapes or draw paths using different tools, the Touch shortcut you see as the circle down here can be used to add additional functionality to a tool.
For example, with the Shape Tool selected, pressing the Touch shortcut and drawing you can make a perfect shape.
Release your Pencil or finger and then the Touch shortcut.
If you have artwork selected, you'll see the Common Actions bar below it.
In here you'll find commonly used options like changing the opacity or transparency of artwork, duplicating, deleting and arranging.
To quickly change the color of your artwork, you have Fill and Stroke color or Border in the Toolbar.
Tapping Fill for instance, you can select the default color, you can create your own, even apply different types of color gradients or a blend of colors.
For drawing more freeform paths you can use the Pencil Tool and for more precise paths, you can use the Pen Tool.
With these tools and the Shape Tools you can draw with the Apple Pencil for more precision and control, but you can also draw freely with your finger.
With the Pencil Tool selected, down here you can set Smoothing for the path you're about to draw to 0 for no smoothing or 10 for clean curves.
Then you can swipe or drag for smooth paths or tap to make straight lines.
With any type of path or shape you create, if you select the Direct Selection Tool, you can tap on a path to edit the individual anchor points that control a path shape.
You can add text to your project using the Type Tool by tapping or dragging.
And if you double tap to select the text, you can change it.
You can then apply basic formatting options like size and spacing in Common Actions.
Take your text formatting further by changing the font and other settings in the Properties panel on the right.
Including searching fonts up here or finding new fonts for your project by tapping more fonts down here and exploring with different fonts.
If you want to bring in images maybe to trace over a sketch you made, you can import your own reference image from multiple sources, including Photoshop files.
When you're ready to share your artwork, you can export your project in different formats for things like sharing with clients or viewers or friends.
Now that you've had a quick look at the main features and tools, start exploring with your own project and check out the other learn video tutorials available, as well as the in-app tours to keep exploring.
