History of the AV1 file.

In 2015, numerous tech giants, such as Amazon, Microsoft and Netflix founded the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). This is a non-profit workforce, dedicated to developing open-source technologies, like AV1, for the next generation of video delivery.

The AV1 codec was created as open-source, royalty free alternative to the more commonly used H.264 and H.265 video codec created by the Moving Picture Experts Group. The aim was to enable the Alliance for Open Media and other bodies to produce and share high quality videos, without having to pay royalties to Moving Picture Experts Group.

AV1 entered the market in March 2018 and has quickly gained momentum. In fact, Netflix is now streaming AV1 video to selected Smart TVs and game consoles. Google has also embraced AV1. And with more widespread support anticipated from major content providers and hardware companies, it’s likely AV1 will fall into widespread adaptation in the coming years.

Pros and cons of AV1 files.

Despite its growing popularity, there are still some positive points and drawbacks to the AV1 format which you need to know before using it.

{{questions-we-have-answers}}

Is AV1 good quality?

AV1 is the latest video codec. It uses lossy compression, which essentially reduces the file size, without removing any data. Typically, AV1 has a 30% better compression efficiency than H.265. AV1 can also deliver better video quality at lower bitrates than other formats such as H.264 and VP9.

Is AV1 the future?

AV1 is a relatively new video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It offers significant advantages to its predecessors, H.264 and H.265, which are more commonly in use. However, AV1 is currently only supported by one browser on desktop. But with more support expected, AV1 is anticipated to grow in the coming years.

Where is AV1 used?

AV1 was released in 2018 and is already used by Netflix to stream high-quality video content across selected smart TVs and game consoles. More tech manufacturers are also starting to roll out AV1 capable devices. In fact, shortly after AV1’s release, both Samsung and LG revealed plans to support the open-source codec.

Is AV1 better than H.264?

Like AV1, H.264, also referred to as AVC or MPEG-4 Part 10, is a video codec. Unlike H.264 however, AV1 is royalty free and open source, meaning that anyone can use it on the internet. AVI is also capable of better compression, reducing file sizes up to 50 percent smaller than H.264.

Does Netflix use the AV1 codec?

Netflix is now streaming high-quality AV1 video content across selected Smart TVs and game consoles. The AV1 codec is said to be between 20 and 40 percent more efficient than the High Efficiency Video Coding, also known as the H.265 format, currently used by Netflix, Amazon, and Disney Plus.
