Camera settings for engaging marketing videos
Video is a top-notch marketing strategy. Engage your audience with these marketing video tips.
Marketing videos help you directly tell your brand story to your audience. They’re a great way to immerse viewers in the brand experience, and create an authentic connection with the consumer. The key is to strike the right balance between high production quality and a sense of relatability.
Try these camera settings to film a video that feels authentic to your audience while remaining professional and engaging.
Ready, set, film.
First, define your brand narrative, tone, look, and feel. Once you sort that out, play around with these basic camera settings to capture your brand’s essence:
- Frame rate. Frame rate is the number of frames within one second of video footage. The most common rates are 24 frames per second (fps), 30 fps, 60 fps, and 120 fps. Real-time footage is best shot at 24 fps. A rate of 30 fps gives your video a more vintage feel, which could be an interesting aesthetic if it fits your brand. For slow-motion footage, go for 60 or 120 fps.
- Shutter speed. Shutter speed measures how long light hits your video camera. A good rule of thumb: keep your shutter speed at 2x your fps. This will give you high-quality footage to match your high-quality storytelling.
- Aperture. Aperture defines how open or closed your lens is, how much light it’s letting in, and how focused your foreground and background are. The smaller the lens opening, the wider your depth of field. The bigger the lens opening, the more shallow your depth of field. Think about what you’re conveying about your brand. Is it an outdoors brand that would benefit from evoking sweeping, awe-inspiring landscapes? You might want to play with a wider depth of field. Or is it a product-focused brand with lots of detail, such as jewelry? A shallow depth of field, with heightened focus on those essential details, would do the trick.
