Update available for potential ColdFusion 8 privilege escalation issue

Summary

A vulnerability in ColdFusion could allow a lower-privileged user to bypass sandbox security and access sensitive information, and could potentially lead to a privilege escalation attack. This issue is particularly applicable to ColdFusion servers in a shared hosting environment. This issue is not remotely exploitable.

Affected software versions

ColdFusion 8, ColdFusion 8.0.1 and ColdFusion MX 7.0.2 Solution

Solution

Adobe recommends affected ColdFusion customers update their installation using the instructions below:

ColdFusion 8.0.1

  1. Download the hot fix. (51K) (note: for certain browsers, changing the file from .zip to .jar may be required during or after download)
  2. Open the ColdFusion Administrator and select the System Information page. Next to the Update File field, either: a. Type in the file path and click Submit. OR b. Click the Browse button, browse to the downloaded file, select the file and then Apply.
  3. Stop and restart the ColdFusion 8 Application Server.

The ColdFusion hot fix JAR file does not need to be retained after installing it with the ColdFusion Administrator. The file has been copied into the correct location. The ColdFusion hot fix JAR file will appear as a new entry in the System Information list.

ColdFusion 8.0.0

  1. Download the hot fix. (51K) (note: for certain browsers, changing the file from .zip to .jar may be required during or after download)
  2. Open the ColdFusion Administrator and select the System Information page. Next to the Update File field, either: a. Type in the file path and click Submit. OR b. Click the Browse button, browse to the downloaded file, select the file and then Apply.
  3. Stop and restart the ColdFusion 8 Application Server.

ColdFusion 7.0.2

  1. Download the hot fix. (34K) (note: for certain browsers, changing the file from .zip to .jar may be required during or after download)
  2. Open the ColdFusion Administrator and select the System Information page. Next to the Update File field, either: a. Type in the file path and click Submit. OR b. Click the Browse button, browse to the downloaded file, select the file and then Apply.
  3.  Stop and restart the ColdFusion Application Server.

The ColdFusion hot fix JAR file does not need to be retained after installing it with the ColdFusion Administrator. The file has been copied into the correct location. The ColdFusion hot fix JAR file will appear as a new entry in the System Information list.

Adobe categorizes this as an important issue and recommends affected users patch their installations.
