Adobe Contribute CS4 accessibility overview

With Adobe® Contribute® CS4 software, you can make simple updates to your website without being a professional web designer. Contribute CS4 helps ensure that updates are accessible to people with disabilities — just one more way that Contribute makes publishing easier.

Contribute offers a unique set of tools that allow website administrators to establish and maintain site accessibility. Accessibility is directly incorporated into Contribute. Website administrators can modify accessibility settings to specify whether content contributors should use HTML or CSS for text formatting and to require text descriptions for images and identification of data-table headings. In this way, content contributors don't need advanced technical knowledge to meet rigorous accessibility standards such as the Priority 2 checkpoints of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Accessible templates

Contribute enables website administrators to provide content authors with specific accessible templates that contain authoring privileges for each individual content contributor. By starting with accessible templates, content authors are guided by prompts to accessible pages. Website administrators can make their own accessible templates or use one of the many templates that come with Contribute.

Accessibility prompts

Contribute prompts users to provide accessibility information when they insert content on the page. As content contributors add images and tables, Contribute asks them to supply the necessary description and header information, eliminating the need to open dialog boxes to find the appropriate fields. By making it automatic and easy to provide the necessary information, Contribute helps ensure that content will be as accessible as possible.

Formatting text

Websites that meet W3C Priority 2 checkpoints provide enhanced flexibility and give users with disabilities the power to view content. Increasingly, accessibility policies require the use of CSS. Contribute enables website administrators to easily change a web page's text formatting from HTML to CSS. The change is not apparent to the content contributor, as the font, text size, and bold and italics formatting tools remain exactly the same. This feature significantly reduces the training requirements for creating accessible pages using CSS.

Accessible workspace

Contribute is itself accessible as an authoring tool. It is compatible with popular screen readers such as JAWS and Window-Eyes and enables users to activate all options using the keyboard. Contribute is the ideal tool for content authors with disabilities to create, maintain, and edit web content.
