Any color name that’s based on a natural source is based on an “average” of that source. Since the exact hue of linen color varies depending on how the flax is processed, linen color was accepted as the most common hue. Linen color was named after the light brown of undyed linen fiber, but it’s not the only word named after “undyed linen.” The color word ecru comes from the French word for “raw” and refers to the color of “raw” (undyed) linen, too. The color ecru is much darker than linen color, though. The French word for undyed wool, on the other hand, is beige, which inspired the color “beige” in English. Linen color and beige are closer in hue, but beige is lighter and yellower than the color linen.

Linen color is a soft, earthy neutral that represents dependability. The color linen is calming, which makes it useful in palettes that stir more powerful emotions. Other qualities associated with linen color include nature, relaxation, and impartiality.

Linen color is a light, warm neutral that can match with any palette. Its role does change, though. Combined with other neutrals like white, brown, or black, linen color becomes a source of warmth. Next to pink and coral, the color linen cools the palette’s brightness. Pair linen color with navy blue or azure for a look of opulence.
