Despite initially building the platform around photos, the makers behind Instagram recognize the allure of eye-catching videos. Unfortunately, posting a video directly to your Instagram grid can often result in the opposite effect — blurry, low-quality videos.
This is due to the fact that even if you upload a video in 4K resolution to your Instagram grid, the app will automatically compress it down to a 640x360 resolution. This is considered standard definition for your grid — and can be quite a disappointing result after you've spent hours filming crisp shots. Thankfully, there's a solution for uploading better videos.
Upload your high-quality videos to Instagram TV.
To upload the highest possible quality video to Instagram, you'll want to post your video to IGTV instead of your standard grid. IGTV offers a much better resolution and bitrate than the traditional method for uploads.
Keep in mind that videos on IGTV will need to be at least one minute long, so if your video is less than a minute, simply loop your video with editing software to hit that one-minute mark. When you're ready to post, you'll have the option to "Post a Preview."
By checking this box, your video will post to IGTV as well as your grid — but at a resolution nearly 2x higher than if you uploaded it directly to your grid. The result? A better viewing experience all around.
